FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – IPFW took Saturday to give a big "thank you" to the community of Fort Wayne.

Over 1,100 IPFW students, staff, and alumni volunteered at "The Big Event", one big day of service to express their gratitude to the community.

More than 50 not-for-profit agencies took part and Mayor Tom Henry welcomed the volunteers to campus to thank them for their hard work.

Volunteers gathered in the athletics fieldhouse before receiving their assignments and being transported to their job sites.

"We're doing everything from cleaning horse barns to making pillows for the children's hospital, to helping not-for-profits clean-up and tidy up, churches and all kinds of daycares so we're just giving back to the community,” said Kenneth Christmon, Associate Vice Chancellor of Diversity.

"Personally I like animals so just for me to personally help them, I always see the commercials and stuff but now I'm actually helping and it's real great hanging out with my teammates, clowning, having fun, and just helping out the community,” said Steven Forbes, an IPFW student-athlete.

A victory party took place back at the fieldhouse when the teams returned from their service.
