FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Following a fatal traffic accident at Kroemer Road and US 30 last week, the Indiana Department of Transportation began its analysis of the intersection Wednesday.
INDOT spokeswoman Mary Foster says it is standard operating procedure for the transportation department to conduct traffic studies following fatal crashes. As part of that study, INDOT set up two traffic cameras to measure traffic volume at Kroemer and US 30. Additionally, she says they will look into the crash history of the intersection. When the details of the study will be released is still not known.
On Friday, July 27 around 3:00 p.m., a semi truck plowed into four vehicles traveling westbound. Police believe the driver of the semi hit the four vehicles moments after the light turned green. Six people were taken to the hospital with injuries. One of the victims, Abigail Marie Little, 4, of Albion, died as the result of her injuries.
One of the first witnesses to Friday’s deadly crash was Joe James who works in the area. He says he was involved in his own nearly fatal crash with a semi in almost the identical spot where Little lost her life. He says he was immediately reminded of his own crash when he made it to the intersection of Kroemer and US 30.
"I saw what happened and I know I just—chills went down my spine and I remembered what happened back in March and I just hoped everyone was ok, but looking at it I knew that—not to expect anything good from it."
James was turning left on Kroemer from US 30 West when a semi ran a red light, smashing into the front-end of his car. James left the scene with minor injuries after his airbags deployed. He says he thought his crash would have been enough to signal the state to investigate the scene.
"How many accidents is it going to take for the State of Indiana to take this seriously? What's going to happen next? Next time it could be even worse."
Indiana’s NewsCenter left a message with the Fort Wayne Police Department Wednesday in an effort to get the names of the other victims involved in Friday’s crash as well as the blood test results for the driver of the semi.
The call was not immediately returned.
