FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - This month for "I Wear Pink" we are focusing on your genetic risk for breast cancer.

Did you know that Parkview Hospital now has a genetic counselor who can sit down with you and help you decide if genetic testing is something you should pursue? Melissa Dempsey says you should take some time this Thanksgiving to talk about your family medical history with relatives.

Find out if anyone has had breast cancer at an early age, before the age of 50. If you have multiple family members who have had breast cancer or if anyone has had two separate cancers these are all red flags that indicate you might want to book a genetic counseling session.

Melissa Dempsey says, "the benefit of a genetic counselor is just having an hour or two to really go over your family history and you might have a 5% or an 80% risk; and knowing that can really help you decide if you want to pursue the testing." Genetic testing usually consists of a saliva swap that is sent to a lab. Results take about a month.

The cost can be up to $4500.00, but some insurance companies will pay for it. A counselor can help you decide which options are best for you, if your results determine that you are at an increased risk for breast cancer.
