FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Every 21st day of the month, 21 Alive raises awareness about breast cancer through our campaign "I Wear Pink."
Every time a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, they may think drastic surgery is their only option, but a clinical nurse specialist with Parkview says there are many options, and with the help of the breast care team patients can find the right path for their journey.
When going in for a biopsy, Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Nancy Ehmke says patients often have many questions, and that's where the Parkview Breast Care Team comes in.
The Breast Care Team is made up of three Oncology nurses, including Ehmke, who are available 24-7 to answer any and all questions prospective cancer patients and their families may have.
"We're dealing with a lot of the different needs, whether they're physical, or whether they're emotional, and financial. And we hook individuals up with resources that are available in our community,” said Ehmke.
Not only does the Breast Care Team provide support, they also help to expedite the process, by obtaining test results and setting up appointments.
"For example, we can get the biopsy results back in two days and sometimes less than that, and before sometimes it would take a week to get those results,” she said.
Ehmke says breast cancer is one form of cancer that is not necessarily preventable. With support groups like the Breast Care Team, doctors are better able to attack and defeat the disease. But, Oncologists still recommend getting an annual mammogram.
"We can prevent a lot of cancers, but if we can't the next best thing is to detect them early and that makes a huge difference in overall survival,” she said.
Ehmke says the Breast Care Team has been around for several years, and although their main focus is on breast cancer patients, they help and support patients with other types of cancer as well.
