FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) --- Fort Wayne's latest homicide has neighbors on edge.

It not only happened in Northeast Fort Wayne, in an area not known for crime, but it turns out the victim volunteered for an organization that tried to keep senior citizens safe from crime.

Debra Jones is credited with dedicating her life to helping others, and oddly enough, her selfless service focused on protecting others from the evils of crime.

The body of the 59-year old Jones was discovered in her home on Myanna Lane the afternoon of August 30th by her daughter who got worried when her mom didn't answer her calls.

An autopsy revealed she bled to death after suffering a wound to the neck from some sort of sharp object.

Jones volunteered for an organization called "Allen County TRIAD".

It is best known for periodically collecting and disposing of unwanted medications, so they don’t get flushed and contaminate our water supply, or fall into the hands of people who would use them for bad intentions.

But TRIAD also pursues a mission of preventing the criminal victimization of senior citizens.

We spoke with Jill Headrick, who worked alongside Jones at TRIAD-sponsored programs.

" She was a kind heart, a good soul, enthusiastic, loved her work with her seniors, and saw them as truly a passion. It’s a loss for all of us," Headrick said.

We also caught up with a man who lived near the homicide scene, but who didn’t want to be identified.

" A lot of neighbors here in the area are going to be carrying (weapons) soon, because it's just one of those things, if it can happen to her, it can happen to anyone," the man said.

Police aren’t saying much about the investigation.

A police department spokesperson declined to respond when we asked if valuables were taken from the home, if it appears likely that Jones knew her attacker, or if investigators are focusing on any suspects.
