FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Less than six months into 2013 Allen County has seen 23 homicides. In all of last year police investigated 30 homicides.

Of the 23 homicides this year 22 were in the city and one was in the county.

The most recent killing was Sunday. That's when a man was shot at an American Legion Hall in Fort Wayne.

Police Chief Rusty York says in many cases it's difficult to get information from witnesses when these types of crimes happen. He says what could help lower the number of homicides is if witnesses would come forward to police, helping to solve the crimes.

“The people that go out and think they can perpetrate these crimes in broad daylight, in public, you know they're counting on intimidation, you know that fear factor. We can't live that way,” said Chief Rusty York, Fort Wayne Police Department.

The number of killings is also shocking for Fort Wayne City Council President Tom Didier.

"I don't believe that we as a society have to act like this. I'm totally dumbfounded. I don't understand it. I'd like to feel that I could understand it but it's just to me, a lot of senseless killings,” said Tom Didier, Fort Wayne City Council President.

While police investigated 30 homicides in 2012 only 22 were recorded by the FBI and included in the national crime statistics. That happens because some homicides are not counted if they're ruled justifiable or in self defense.

So far in 2013, one of the 23 homicides has been ruled justifiable homicide. And that number could change again as the cases move forward in the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.
