MARION, Ind. (21Alive) – Wednesday morning at Frances Slocum Elementary in Marion started almost like every other. Instead of teachers leading story time, representatives from Dollar General picked out their favorite books and gathered the kids around.
But it was what happened afterwards that made most in the room shed a tear. Principal, Anne Liddic, was beyond surprised when she received a check for $40,000.
“I was overwhelmed. Just knowing what this will mean to our staff and to our students. We’ll be able to lay the foundation for literacy and it’s just amazing. It’s such a blessing,” said Principal Anne Liddic.
Senior Human Resource Manager for Dollar General, Linda Daugherty, says their mission statement can be described in two words: “helping others.”
Liddic says she’s not sure what all of the generous donation will go towards. She says one thing is for sure, part of it will definitely go towards renovating the library. She hopes students will see the changes right after winter recess.
