DeKalb County, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) – A mother and her three daughters are killed in a crash involving a train. A baby grandson is lucky to be alive.

The DeKalb County Sheriff says 45-year-old Barbara Pierson, 19-year-old Bessie Pierson, 19-year-old Margaret Pierson and 14-year-old Elizabeth Pierson were all killed Sunday. An infant boy, said to be Margaret’s son, survived the crash with a broken leg and some cuts and bruises, but is said to be doing well. The 19-year-old twins and the 14-year-old are all Barbara's daughters.

It is unclear at this time where the family is from, but the investigation continues.

Officials say the SUV the family was in veered of the highway and onto the median, and then rolled down a bridge embankment and onto railroad tracks shortly after 5:00pm Sunday. At that time, a train coming down the track tried to stop, but was unable. The SUV, which was on its top, was hit and pushed some 2,000 feet.

One of the women was thrown from the SUV. The other three women died at the scene.
