FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – A special dedication ceremony took place Wednesday night in honor of Mark Haudenschild, II, the Washington Township Firefighter who lost his life on duty.
It's been emotional to say the least, for the family of Mark Haudenschild II.
"One minute it's okay, the next minute it's not. There's always something. Things like the song, "YMCA." He loved that song, he was always acting like a nut when it came on at wedding receptions and stuff,” said Mark Haudenschild, Sr. of his son.
"It's helped me realize what I missed out on when Mark was alive, and what I did miss as far as supporting them. I realized a lot more about the fire department and what they do,” said his widow Janet.
It was 17 months ago when Haudenshild was killed in a rollover accident while on his way to put out a fire. Not only was Haudenschild lost, but so was the tanker he was driving.
Through an outpouring of honor and support, the Washington Township Fire Department dedicated their new tanker in the fallen firefighter's memory.
Not only did they dedicate the truck by naming it in Mark Haudenschild II's honor, but they also gave it the same number
"I'm really glad to see they put the same number on the truck again as the one that was wrecked. As far as Mark's living on, he'll live on that way, but he'll also live on through his boy, Mark, too,” said Haudenschild, Sr.
Mark III, who his mother says couldn't be more proud of his father.
"Every time he sees any fire truck he gets really excited, but to him this is Daddy's station and Daddy's old trucks,” said Janet.
And that's just how the fire service men and women see it too as they push forward with life.
"It's really bittersweet. it feels good that they will never forget--I know they won't forget him anyway, but they're honoring him and it's very very awesome and very sweet,” said Janet.
