Kosciusko County, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - A family is grieving the loss of a father and son after both were found dead from gunshot wounds and their Kosciusko County home engulfed in flames.

Monday afternoon David Lowry heard a loud noise right before he found his 18-year-old son Nick Lowry dead in his bedroom. Investigators say it appears Nick shot himself.

Less than 12 hours later police were called to the house on South County Road 800 West, just north of Mentone, again. This time, the home was up in flames and the father was found dead just outside the home. Detectives believe he too shot himself.

“It's very unusual, the father was apparently, or from our detective’s assessment, he could potentially be that depressed or upset and grieving for his son,” said Sgt. Chad Hill, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.

ABC 21 Alive spoke with some of Dave and Nick's family members. They didn't want to speak on camera but described Nick as a very happy kid. They said the relationship he had with his father was a very close one and they used to often work on cars together. None of them have any idea what could have led to such a tragedy.

"At this time of year, nationally and statistically, suicides are very high anytime around the holiday season,” said Sgt. Hill.

That's why Sgt. Hill says it's important to keep an even close eye on your loved ones.

"If they're acting strangely or saying things strangely listen a little bit more intentively possibly, ask more questions to see maybe what their emotional state is."

Investigators believe the fire was intentionally set but that investigation is ongoing. And although foul play has been ruled out the coroner has yet to rule the exact cause of death for both David and Nick.
