LEO, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A four year old Border Terrier from Leo wins big at the AKC Eukanuba National Championship in California.
Joyful's The Sound of Silence is better known as Simon to his adoring owners. Beth and Chuck McQuaig.
Debbie Greer is a local dog groomer, handler, and occasional breeder. She owns Simon's mother, and once he was born the McQuaig household was a perfect fit for the pup.
After some discussion, Debbie and Beth decided to begin showing Simon. He was a star right off the bat, doing very well in most competitions.
After obtaining the Grand Champion title from the American Kennel Club (AKC), the pooch and his handler, Greer, were able to qualify for the highly respected AKC Eukanuba National Championship in Long Beach.
The show was held in early December, and much to everyone's surprise, Simon won Best of Breed and Best Bred by Exhibitor.
Greer says Simon is a very relaxed and calm dog, and just like most show dogs... he's a treasured part of the family.
"They are pets first and foremost. They're on the couch, on the bed, 99% of the time. They just go show every once in a great while and that's just a fun little trip and then they're back to being just a pet."
After more than 40 shows, Simon is retiring at the age of four. Don't think he'll just be lying around though. His owners say he'll stay busy as a therapy dog or helping children at local libraries.
You can watch the AKC Eukanuba National Championship on ABC this Sunday (Jan. 23) at 2:00p.m.
