HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (21Alive) - One person is dead after an accident that shutdown Interstate 69 in both directions for hours.
Huntington County Dispatch says that a three vehicle crash has shut down both directions of I-69 around mile marker 285 near Markle.
The call first came in around 7 p.m., and both north and southbound lanes had shut down by 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Huntington County Sheriff's Department reports that two vehicles traveling northbound on I-69 made collided due to icy road conditions and stopped on the side of the road near the Wabash River Bridge. Both drivers got out of their vehicles when a third vehicle, also traveling northbound, lost control and struck the first vehicle, pushing it into the second vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle was pinned between the two vehicles and sustained multiple traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Huntington deputies say the first vehicle caught fire following the collision. The first driver suffered minor injuries, and the third driver was not hurt.
As of 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Huntington County Dispatch said both lanes had finally opened.
