LA PORTE, Ind. (21Alive) - An Michigan murder convict who escaped prison was caught Monday night in Northwest Indiana.

Around 6 p.m. Monday, a LaPorte County Sheriff's Department deputy attempted to pullover a driver in a stolen vehicle. The driver, later determined to be Elliot, refused to stop and sped away, according to the Indiana State Police.

After a short pursuit, Elliot was arrested and taken to the LaPorte County Jail.

Elliot, who escaped Sunday, was serving four life sentences for multiple first degree murders, arson and armed robbery for offenses that occurred in Michigan in 1993. Elliot killed two men and two women over drug money, and set their home on fire to cover it up.

Elliot escaped from Ionia Correctional Facility in Michigan on Sunday, according to a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Corrections. Police say somehow, Elliot got his hands on a white prison kitchen uniform, managed to get into a typically secured prison sally port, then slipped outside and through two perimeter fences.

Authorities believe Elliot carjacked a woman in Ionia using a knife or box cutter and drove to Middlebury, Indiana, where they stopped for gas on State Road 13 just before midnight.

Police say when Elliot got out to pump gas, the woman called 911 on her cell. The dispatcher told her to get inside the gas station, go to the bathroom and lock the door.

When Elliot realized she wasn't coming out, he took off, but police were able to calculate how far he could go on the small amount of gas he'd put in the car. Elliot drove off before police arrived and is still on the loose.

Police found Elliot's getaway vehicle in Shipshewana at 5:30 Monday morning, Indiana State Police say. Police believe Elliot is heading to Tennessee through Indiana. The vehicle is being towed back to Michigan as evidence to authorities.

Police asked residents in LaGrange County and Noble County to stay inside their homes and lock their doors as police searched door-to--door.

The school in Westview School District was put on lock down during the search. Shipshewana Police Department escorted all the children out of the school safely, Indiana State Police Sgt. Ron Galaviz says.
