FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – The historic Coney Island celebrated their 100 year anniversary with a hot dog eating contest.
The preliminary contest was held at the Deer Park Irish Pub Saturday afternoon.
Ten heats of ten people were given ten fully loaded hot dogs to eat as fast as they can.
The owners say holding an eating contest has been in high demand for some time.
“Today they're going to eat them fully dressed. At Nathan's, they eat eat them plain and they dip them in water and we decided to go, you know what, our customers have been asking for a hot dog eating contest for years. We said you're going to eat everything on them, so they get mustard, coney sauce and onions. That's how they have to eat them,” said Co-owner Tom Todoran.
“Well, it's as a result of the festival the invitation to participate and for years people would say ‘you don't have a hot dog eating contest’. well it being 100 years, we thought this was a really good time to do it,” said Co-owner Kathy Choka.
The winner of each heat will advance to the finals, which will be held during the Three Rivers Festival on July 12.
