FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – No child should ever have cancer, but the students at Concordia Lutheran High School are making sure one little girl who does will always feel like a princess.
Eleven year old Aleigha Sweet is like an honorary student at Concordia High School. For the past two years she’s been involved in their St. Baldrick's Fundraiser where people shave their heads for childhood cancer.
"I tell them about my story about when I had Cancer,” said Aleigha.
Aleigha was diagnosed with childhood lung cancer at just 4-years old. It went into remission when she was six, and now just three months shy of her 5th anniversary of being cancer free she's been diagnosed again.
"They say this is a high cure-rate cancer...but no child should ever have cancer," said Angie Sweet, her mother.
Inspired by Aleigha's giving spirit and positive attitude, students at Concordia are planning some special events during Homecoming Week.
"It would just be a great week to show a selfless act of kindness and honor the Sweet family and just give them support and just let them know that all of Concordia is here for Aleigha,” said Allison McConnell, Executive Board member of the Student Council.
On Monday, Aleigha was given a jersey by the Senior cheerleaders and a bag of pink goodies from the art students, but later on this week, "Aleigha is going to be our honorary Homecoming Princess at the game Friday, so she gets her little tiara and gets to stand with the Homecoming Queen,” said McConnell.
Not only that, but students plan to sell wristbands, t-shirts and other items in her honor all in the color pink, Aleigha's "power" color.
"She believes in the power of pink because she has a picture of Jesus with a pink heart in it, so she always wears pink when she goes through chemo,” said Michelle Converset, teacher and Student Council advisor.
"It's pretty amazing that kids that are just a little older than her could care so much for a child they've only met briefly,” said Angie with tears in her eyes.
"It's pretty cool,” said Aleigha.
You can see Aleigha's crowning moment during Concordia’s homecoming game Friday at 7 p.m. at Zollner Stadium.
