FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Fort Wayne police officers rescued an apparently suicidal man after a vehicle chase near downtown.

Tuesday at around 3:30, police began pursuing a man with his wife in a van. The man led police on a chase through Fort Wayne, hitting a mail truck in the process, and then stopped in the 1600 block of Fairfield Ave.

The man then threatened to jump off an area bridge but an officer under the bridge was able to distract the man long enough for two other officers to come up from behind and restrain him.

The woman had been pulled safely out of the van at some point during the chase when the vehicle had stopped. She told police that he was a military veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
