FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Because of droughts across Texas and the West the past several years, beef prices are up 20% over the past two years.
And according to the Department of Agriculture, the price of beef could still go up in the coming weeks.
During the droughts, ranchers had to sell off their herds because it cost too much to feed and water them.
And that means the national cattle herd is at its smallest level in 60 years.
As supply goes down, prices go up.
So Jamison meats has seen customers alter their buying habits.
They're buying more bratwurst, pork and chicken, or choosing cheaper cuts of beef.
“You know, a lot of the customers, they would take a steak, and the steak may cost nine dollars. Now they're taking shish-kebobs. Still get the beef in it, but it's only half the price. So they're switching to alternate sources of I'll say pleasure in their meals,” Jamison says.
Hot sellers these days are ribs and rib eyes. Jamison says with the holiday weekend coming up, he’s not sure he’ll have enough for everyone who wants them.
