FORT WAYNE, Ind.(www.incnow.tv) - Several people were forced out of their homes after flames ate away the roof of a Fort Wayne apartment complex late Wednesday night. The Red Cross was called in to assist those displaced by the blaze.
FWFD crews were called to the Twin Oaks Apartments on 2708 E. Paulding Rd. after reports of flames shooting from the second floor.
16 apartment units were evacuated as the crews zeroed-in on the attic of the structure.
The location of the fire made the fight difficult according to FWFD Chief Amy Biggs. In fact, a second alarm was called, and about 40 firemen were on the scene before the night was through. The fire was under control in about 50 minutes.
The second floor of the of the building sustained heavy smoke damage, and residents were not allowed back in. The Red Cross was called in to assist them.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this point. We will update you when there's more information available.
