FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- For one elementary girl, hard work has paid off.

Officials from the Three Rivers Festival held a competition for local elementary students, to find out how the festival mascot, Admiral Andy, made his way to Fort Wayne.

Bethany Villaruz from Aboite Elementary school had the winning story.

Admiral Andy made a surprise visit to her classroom Friday to congratulate her.

“Well, he was washed up on the bank of the Maumee River and he got a job as the mascot and that's kinda it. He lives here,” says Bethany.

While Admiral Andy spent time with the students, they each received Three Rivers Festival souvenirs.
