HUNTINGTON, Ind. (21Alive) – The apple crop took a hit with the weather a year ago, but it's making a comeback in 2013.
Kathryn Eckert is a co-owner of Phil’s Orchard in Huntington, which used to be known as Huntington Orchards.
Phil’s Orchard is a "u-pick-em", where you can go out and pick your own apples to take home.
Eckert says the apple crop is really good this year after a disappointing crop last year.
“There were no apples last year because in March we had the beautiful weather, everything blossomed, all the little apples started popping out and then we had two freezes in April and everything fell off the limbs. So there were no apples last year and this year there are millions literally millions and millions of different apples and we have about 50 varieties out here,” said Eckert.
Twelve years ago, when it was still called Huntington Orchards, a fire swept through and destroyed the "u-pick" part of the crop.
Eckert says this is the first year apples in the “u-pick” section are available since the fire.
