FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - A child was injured Monday after being hit by a red 1993 Oldsmobile.
Police say it happened around 5:30 Monday evening, and witnesses say it was a "panicked" scene.
It happened on busy Weisser Park Ave. near E. Pettit Ave., where celebrations were going on at nearby parks.
Jason Guice says he was grilling hamburgers for Cornerstone Harvest Church's "Wow Jam" at nearby Brewer Park when the accident occurred.
He says the little girl, now known to be Alanie Brown, 5, darted across the street to get to the event, when she was hit.
"I looked over there and the little girl was laying in the street and everybody ran to her, but she wasn't moving at the time. But I think the probably just dodged across, you know it's a big event, and I think the guy was going just a little bit too fast. Especially with all these kids running through here, it's kind of, you know, a place you need to slow down,” he said.
The driver of the red 1993 Oldsmobile told police that he saw a mother and several kids standing at the corner and took his foot off the gas. He said he saw the mother put her arm up to keep the kids from crossing but at the last minute Alanie darted out around the mother's arm and ran out in front of him. He told police that he never tried to leave the scene and stopped immediately.
Guice says miraculously Alanie was able to get up and she was responsive, with minor bleeding on her head.
Police say no charges will be filed against the driver because it was an accident.
