UNITED STATES (www.incnow.tv) – For the first time, a major U.S. poll shows a majority of nationwide support for legalizing marijuana.
According to a new survey from the Pew Research Center, 52-percent of Americans support legalizing the drug compared to the 12-percent in 1969, when Pew first started asking the question.
This topic has been approaching a majority in support with a Gallup pole finding 50-percent support in 2011, ABC and The Washington Post found that 48-percent supported legalization and this past November, CBS found that 47-percent favored legalization of marijuana.
Support for the legalization of marijuana has grown rapidly, 11-percentage points, over the past three years.
Young people between the age of 18-29 are leading the charge with 64-percent supporting marijuana legalization and those who associate themselves with being politically liberal came in at 73-percent in support. Respondents that fall in the liberal to moderate Republican category jumped from 36-percent supporting the legalization of marijuana to 53-pecent three years later.
