WASHINGTON (21Alive) -- President Obama marks Independence Day by hosting a naturalization ceremony for American military service members at the White House.

More than two dozen members of the armed forces and military spouses took the oath of allegiance Friday morning. The President said embracing diversity and welcoming immigrants into this country is in our DNA.

He also pledged to keep working to improve what he called the nation's "broken" immigration system.

The president also hosted a barbecue and picnic for military families to mark the holiday.
