UNITED STATES (www.incnow.tv) -- A Marine hero who lost a leg in Afghanistan didn't let that stop him from starting a new career in an unlikely place, the world of fashion.
Alex Minska is a Marine and now underwear model, whose right leg was amputated after a roadside bomb nearly killed him Afghanistan.
Four years ago the 24-year-old spent 47 days in a coma. He suffered traumatic brain injuries and severe burns to most of his body.
"I was down. I was numb and I was running away from everything-- running away from everything. You know? Especially myself. My own head.” Minsky said.
Depression and alcoholism followed but Minsky battled back. He stopped drinking and started working out.
That's when a photographer spotted him at the gym and convinced him to give modeling a shot.
"He approached me and he said, "Wha-- have you ever modeled? Like what are you-- what are you doin'? And he was like, "Hey, wait a second. I'm serious. Have you ever modeled?" Minsky said.
“He had a movie star face with wild ink and sweat. And it was-- it was-- it was too hard to pass up.” Photographer Tom Cullis commented. “Alex wants to be an inspiration to people. To move past their disabilities. Don't give up. “
Alex took reporters through part of his 4-hour daily work-out and there's one other secret he swears by....avocados.
“I mean I eat 'em all the time. I, like, wolf it down really quick with, like, usually egg,” Minsky said.
And now he's hoping to be more than a model, but a role model to others.
“Inspire people. Inspire people and just-- you know, get happy,” Minsky notes.
