ATTICA, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- A heart wrenching story out of the small town west of Lafayette about a house fire that claimed three lives.

Late Monday night going into Tuesday morning Kelly Ward was returning home from running an errand and found her home in flames.

A man, believed to be her husband Lance Ward, 29, called police just after midnight and said his house was filling with smoke but he wasn't able to locate the origin. Firefighters arrived approximately three minutes later and found the home engulfed in flames.

Reports say Lance Ward was found holding his 18-month-old child, Sage, in his arms. The couple's three-year-old daughter was found in her room. There are mixed reports as to whether the family's two dogs were with Lance and Sage or with the 3-year-old daughter but reports say that they were surrounding the body(ies).

According to our affiliate station in Indianapolis, WTHR, firefighters tried to enter the home twice to save the people inside but were driven back by the fire.

Officials say the cause is under investigation but they do not suspect foul play and the gas to the residence is reported to have been turned off for some time.
