The verbal feud between top professional golfers Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia -- which flared up at the recent The Players Championship -- took a ugly turn Tuesday night in the form of a potentially racially insensitive remark made by Garcia during a European Tour players dinner.

According to report from The Guardian, Garcia was asked in jest if he would have the American round for dinner one night during the upcoming US Open. "We will have him round every night," Garcia said. "We will serve fried chicken."

Garcia has since apologized, saying: "I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during the European Tour Players' Awards dinner," Garcia said. "I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner."

Woods, on his Twitter feed, said this in a series of tweets in response to Garcia's remarks:

The comment that was made wasn’t silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate...

I’m confident that there is real regret that the remark was made.

The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it’s long past time to move on and talk about golf.

Garcia isn't the first fellow golfer to make a similar comment involving Woods. Fuzzy Zoeller made a similar comment in 1997, one that wound up costing Zoeller an endorsement deal.
