UNDATED (Indiana's NewsCenter) - If you spend time out in the sun and don’t have the right kind of sunglasses you could be putting your vision at risk.
Doctors say sunglasses with ultra-violet protection are often overlooked in favor of cheaper alternatives.
Glasses with UV resistant coatings or materials shield your eyes from the same rays that can damage your skin except eye damage shows up later in life and can be more serious than a minor sunburn.
Dr. Mona R. Dewart with Visions Optical says, “UVA and UVB radiation are both important when it comes to the eye. Some of the important diseases that have been to linked ultraviolet radiation are cataracts and macular degeneration. They're all diseased that we see increasingly in older portions of our population."
While the effects are felt in our later years research shows damage can occur by the time we are 20-years-old.
