Colorado Theater Shooting Suspect Enters Plea

June 4, 2013 Updated Jun 4, 2013 at 3:44 PM EST

The suspect in last summer's Colorado theater shooting was allowed by a judge on Tuesday to change his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity, according to a report from the Denver Post.

James Holmes, who is accused of killing 12 poeple and wounding more than 50 others last July, was also ordered by the judge to undergo an intensive psychiatric evaluation, according to the Denver Post report.

According to the Denver Post report, Holmes' plea change alllows his lawyers "to argue at trial that their client was so mentally ill at the time of the July 20 shootings that his judgment was affected and he could not tell right from wrong."
