Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. -- the highest-paid athlete in the world -- announced his return to the boxing ring via twitter Wednesday night, and it's a big fight -- one that could break pay-per-view records, according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

The 36-year-old Mayweather announced he will fight Mexican star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in Las Vegas in September, a bout most fans have been clamoring for.

Mayweather, who improved to 44-0 with a unanimous decision victory over Robert Guerrero on April, will be fighting for the second time in 2013, the first time he has fought twice in a calander year since 2007. For Mayweather's complete professional boxing history click HERE.

Alvarez (42-0), meanwhile, is coming off the biggest victory of his career, a unanimous decision victory over Austin Trout on April 20 in San Antonio. For Alvarez's complete professional boxing history, click HERE.

According to the Sporting News, Mayweather has opened as a short favorite in the fight.

Mayweather's fight with Guerrero reportedly will exceed 1 million pay-per-view buys, but the bout with Alvarez could potentially come close to the record 2.4 million buys produced by the 2007 fight between Mayweather and Oscar De la Hoya.
