A tragic story from New York on Monday night, as reported by Granite Broadcasting sister station WBNG in Binghamton, N.Y.

According to the WBNG report:

The New York State Police investigated a tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 81 in the Town of Lisle that occurred on the shoulder of the northbound lanes just before 8:00 p.m. Monday.

Thirty horses, being transported from Shippensburg, Pennsylvania to a rendering plant in Massueville, Quebec died in the fire.

The driver of the vehicle saw flames coming from the passenger side of the vehicle. He pulled to the shoulder of the road and attempted to extinguish the fire, but was unsuccessful.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire started after a passenger side fuel tank malfunctioned.
