According to the Bradenton (Fla.) Herald, a 41-year-old Florida man was sentenced to 40 days in jail this week after pleading no contest to charges that he tied a 30-pound dumbbell around a dog's neck and placed the dog in a river last April.

A police officer who was passing by spotted the dog -- a two-year-old pit bull mix -- treading water and responded to the scene, according to the Bradenton Herald report. The man, who was not the dog's owner, reportedly told police he was trying to make the dog stronger, according to the report.
