TUCSON, Arizona (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - The suspect in Saturday’s mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona made his initial appearance in federal court, Monday.

Prosecutors say 22-year-old Jared Loughner killed six people and wounded 14 others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Among the "federal" charges Loughner faces?

One-count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress and two-counts of killing an employee of the federal government.

In the meantime, two of those injured have been released from the hospital.

As for Congresswoman Giffords, doctors say she's responding to simple commands, giving them hope she might survive.

Dr. Michael Lemole with Tucson's University Medical Center says, “We're not out of the woods yet - that swelling can sometimes take three days or five days to maximize.”

Doctors say they have not seen an increase in brain swelling, which is leaving them optimistic that Giffords will pull-through.

Indiana 6th District Congressman, Mike Pence, issued the following statement regarding the Arizona shooting incident.

Pence says he is "shocked and saddened about the attack on Representative Giffords" but added "we cannot fear free assembly, because of the acts of a single assailant.

We live in an open society and enjoy representative democracy.

Our system depends on regular and informal contact with our elected representatives.

Neither the public nor public servants should be dissuaded from participating in public assembly because of the despicable acts of one, deranged person."
