FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - As one Fort Wayne hospital places the last steel beam... another lifts its first. Parkview Hospital celebrated their topping out ceremony Thursday morning. Placing the final beam on top of the future site of the Heart Center at their North Campus.

This marks the halfway point for the project.

Mike Packnett says, "We still have 535 days to go, but it's amazing the amount of progress we've made since September 30 of 2008."

Parkview's Regional Medical Center won't open for another two years. And once it's finished, they'll have more than 400 new private rooms, multiple specialty centers, a level two trauma center, and a new ER.

And while Parkview continues building from the ground up at a new site on the north end of Fort Wayne, Lutheran is starting from their top floor and going higher.

Karen Springer says, "It's an ongoing project that we're looking at as the overall renovation and expansion of this facility."

Lutheran's new fifth floor will add more than 58,000 square feet to the hospital, which equates to 96 new private rooms. Both hospitals expect to be finished by 2012.
