FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - In its third year in the Summit City, the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event broke the world record for the largest group of people to run in high heels.
It was a huge accomplishment for the Fort Wayne Women's Bureau, having had more than 950 people participate in the event. The previous record to beat was about 700.
The race kicked off at 10 a.m. this morning at Headwaters Park in Fort Wayne, with both men and women sporting a brightly colored pair of red pumps. Some wore socks for added comfort.
"This is about the entire community coming out to support us," said Jeanette Dillon of the Women's Bureau. "We could not have done [the walk] without the support of many, many people."
The walk raises money for a rape awareness and counseling program called REACT.
Event organizers say they expect to make more than $110,000.00 from the walk to support victims in northeast Indiana.
More than 125 volunteers made the event possible including Indiana's NewsCenter's own Curtis Smith who was the emcee at the event.
