INDIANAPOLIS (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White has been indicted by a Grand Jury on voter fraud charges.

White admitted to voting at the wrong precinct during the May primary, and claimed it was a simple mistake.

He surrendered to authorities Thursday afternoon.

Despite the indictment, it is business as usual at the Secretary of State's office.

Jason Thomas says, “We are continuing to work in the Secretary of State's office. We're incorporating businesses, working to help elderly fraud victims and continuing our business as normal.”

White faces seven felony counts.

Legally White can stay in office unless he is convicted, however in a statement from the Governor late Thursday, Governor Daniels is calling for him to step down from his duties for the time being until a verdict is reached. The chairmen of Indiana's Democratic and Republican parties also agree that White needs to step down while facing the charges.

Governor Daniels says, "This news is sad and regrettable, but the only course of honor is for Mr. White to step down from his duties, at least during the duration of these proceedings until a verdict is reached. It would be neither credible nor appropriate for the state’s top elections official to continue to perform his duties while contesting criminal charges, some of them under the very laws the Secretary of State implements. I have consulted with each of the other statewide elected officials and our judgment about this is unanimous.”

White says, “I think that issue is going to work itself out, and let the investigation go as it goes. I need to concentrate on the job I was elected here to do and that's what I’m gonna do.”

If White is convicted, Governor Daniels could name a successor.

White is currently out on bond.
