GAINSESVILLE, Florida (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Despite a warning from the top U.S. general in Afghanistan. The pastor of a Florida church says his congregation will move forward with plans to burn copies of the Koran.
Rev. Terry Jones is the Pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida.
Members plan to burn copies of the Koran, the religious text of Islam, to protest the September 11th terrorist attacks.
General David Petraeus says he's concerned the burning would endanger American troops.
Petraeus says, “We've already seen a demonstration here in Kabul, just at the rumor that this event could take place. And I think in fact images from such an activity could very well be used by extremists here and around the world in the same way they used images from Abu Ghraib and some other incidents over the years since 9-11 they would use them to enflame public opinion and to incite violence against our soldiers and civilians.”
Rev. Jones says he's received about 100 death threats since announcing plans for the burning.
He says supporters have been mailing copies of the Koran to his church to be used in the burning.
