INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee
begins its work on property taxes today with a hearing on three
The House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing Monday on
Governor Daniels' tax plan. That hearing stretched into the evening
as taxpayers and interest groups testified.
Daniels wants to raise the state sales tax to 7% and limit property tax bills to 1%of assessed valuation for homesteaders, 2%for rental property and 3% for business.
Witnesses said the plan could hurt the working poor, landlords and schools, particularly those in urban areas.
The House committee has scheduled at least two more public
hearings -- December 10th in Evansville and January 9th in Fort
