Inmates Jailed on Crack Cocaine Charges Could be Released from Prison Early

WASHINGTON (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Thousands of inmates sentenced on crack cocaine charges could be released from prison early, as changes in penalties go into effect Tuesday.

The disparity in sentences for crack verses powdered cocaine has been criticized as discriminatory because it disproportionally affects black defendants.

Congress passed the Fair Sentencing Act and President Obama signed it last year.
