Huntertown, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – It appears that Huntertown doesn’t have IDEM’s support in building its own sewage treatment plant and that the town should continue its relationship with Fort Wayne City Utilities.
In a Fort Wayne City Utilities release made public Wednesday morning it stated:
“City Utilities believes that IDEM has taken appropriate action with this conditional denial as it will give residents yet another opportunity to comment on the proposal. We also anticipate that the conditional denial will likely be appealed by Huntertown. City Utilities will continue to work with IDEM to provide any information that might help the IDEM Commissioner make an informed final decision.
This conditional denial reiterates what Huntertown residents have been saying – that a continued relationship with City Utilities is an affordable option and that further environmental degradation that would result from a Huntertown sewage treatment plant is not necessary. City Utilities believes that a continued relationship will help ensure Huntertown stays competitive and continues to grow while enjoying some of the lowest sewer rates in the state.
City Utilities remains willing and available to continue discussions with Huntertown about providing them with sewage treatment services in the future. We have recently sent letters to Huntertown suggesting that we meet, and we are awaiting their reply.”
As part of IDEM’s conditional denial, they have recommended another public hearing to take place over the next 30 days where Huntertown residents can once again voice their support or opposition to the plant. One resident, Michael Fleckenstein Sr., says residents do not need another hearing.
“We've had several public meetings already and none of them have swayed anyone in the area, any of the homeowners in the area. Nobody I've ever talked to wants this thing.”
Huntertown Town Council President Jim Fortman told Indiana’s NewsCenter that he had no comment on IDEM’s decision.
