INDIANA (www.incnow.tv) - The final debate between Democrat Joe Donnelly and Republican Richard Mourdock to replace six-term Republican Sen. Dick Lugar will begin at 7 p.m.

Also participating in the debate is Libertarian nominee Andrew Horning.

Most polls currently show the race as a toss-up, one that is receiving national attention.

IPFW’s Department of Political Science Char Jim Lutz, Ph.D. says that because the race is so tight, he does not expect an aggressive tone from either Donnelly or Mourdock. Lutz says Mourdock will continue to attack Donnelly on his support of the Affordable Care Act, auto bailout and spending for social programs.

On the other side, Lutz says viewers can expect Donnelly to hit Mourdock on one of the very same issues: the auto bailout. Mourdock was staunchly opposed to it and tried to fight it.

“It's not like where somebody's behind so they have to be aggressive because it's their only chance. Since it's pretty much neck and neck, there's a danger in being over-aggressive and there are more subtle ways in which you might be able to make points,” Lutz says.

Lutz also says Donnelly will focus some of the debate on courting Lugar democrats, republicans and independents, a group who Lutz says could be opposed to Mourdock due to past comments he made about Lugar.

“I think those are the voters who are up for grabs, and I think those are the voters that have made this particular Senate seat something of a toss up for Indiana, which is rare. Normally, one would expect a more middle-of-the-road Republican to win easily,” says Lutz.
