It's estimated that 17% of Americans will shop online during Cyber Monday. While most sites will make it easy to find specials, some major companies like Target and Apple are e-mailing them to their customer lists.

Most companies have made the online shopping experience secure, but there are things you really need to keep in mind if you're surfing for a deal today.

For starters, make sure your internet connection is secure.
Experts say never make online transactions from a "public" wi-fi location. How you pay is very important, if you pay with a "debit" card, it's important to check your account right after the purchase.

John Kaufeld, an online marketing specialist with IPFW says,
"look to see what things have hit your account because remember with a debit card, as opposed to a credit card, money is coming out of your differently, it is coming out immediately. if you suspect there's a suspicious transaction, you need to take action right away"

Kaufeld aslo says to be wary of the e-mail offers you might receive, not just today, but during the Christmas shopping season.
Also, carefully check the time that each sale ends, whether it's Central time or Eastern. Be prepared that the really good deals that are out there, won't last long.

Fort Wayne based Vera Bradley and Sweetwater Sound both offer a number of online specials, as do a number of other local companies.
