FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - With temperatures pushing 90 degrees this week, one type of repair business is booming, as always when heat swelters, air conditioner service technicians work overtime.
Dozens of homeowners have been calling in during the past week saying their air conditioning unit can not keep up with the sweltering heat.
Experts say most of the time the units need simple maintenance like fixing leaks, cleaning dirty coils, or replacing dirty air filters.
So what can homeowners do to say cool, experts say proper thermostat temperatures are the key.
"When it's 95 degrees out or 90 you know about 73, 74 is a good temperature to keep it set on. You can turn it down in the evening once it gets cooler outside but you're asking a lot out of a condenser to give you 65, 66 degrees when it's 95 degrees outside," said J.O. Mory Service Technician Mike Schenk.
Not only will 73 or 74 keep your a-c unit running better, homeowners will see a "significant savings" on their monthly energy bill.
Overall, experts say make sure your unit is properly charged.
That proper charge will make your home feel less humid, allowing you to set your thermostat at a higher temperature, while still feeling cool and comfortable inside your home.
