FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's Newscenter)--
"833 dollars and 14 cents, I couldn't believe it" Bob and Doris Eminger could hardly believe the numbers, after a 169 dollar gas bill in November, their December bill was over 833 dollars, an increase of 663 dollars.
Bob Eminger- "I didn't believe it, we were in shock and got right on the phone"
Since their bill is automatically deducted from their checking account each month, the amount had already been paid by the time they saw the bill. December was a colder than usual month, but this seemed like a number that couldn't be possible. Nipsco officials also had their doubts after hearing the numbers, after checking, they informed the Eminger's that the meter had been misread and a refund check of a little over 400 dollars would arrive in a few weeks.
It's actually very simple to read your gas meter and compare the 4 dials to what your gas bill reads, if you don't feel your bill is right, Nipsco advises to call their 1-800 number and they'll walk you through it.
Larry Graham "if you think your bill isn't correct, call 1-800-4-Nipsco and we'll walk you through it. We make mistakes sometimes, a meter can be misread and the bill can be incorrect"
Since their Gas bill was still over 400 dollars, Korte Does it All agreed to come out and inspect the house. They tested the Eminger's two furnaces and also looked for any possible gas leaks.
"that beep indicates we've found a gas leak"
There was a slight gas leak coming from the Eminger's water heater, but Korte told us the small leak would have a minimal impact on a gas bill. While the leak doesn't pose an immediate risk, the Eminger's do plan to have it fixed. Meanwhile, we tried Nipsco's automated service and were able to speak to a person within a short amount of time. While Nipsco told us bills were significantly higher in December, they encourage any customer with questions about their bill to call the number listed.
