FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's Newscenter)-- Back in October, we met Angola's Shelia Dorrel. The 56-year-old suffers from bouts of passing out, along with Osteoporosis and heart problems. Since she can no longer work, she's been trying for nearly 3 years to receive Social Security Disability Benefits, but found herself in a very long line of frustrated Hoosiers waiting for benefits. The great news is it now it appears Shelia's wait is over, after a phone call informed her benefits had been granted.
Shelia Dorrel "the disability office is working on my case and they said I should have my money very shortly, I'm thrilled, finally some relief"
For the last few years, Shelia has been getting by on food stamps and a hardship public housing waiver, along with help from two daughters. She will receive a lump some payment for the past year and then her monthly disability benefits of 725 dollars a month should kick in.
Shelia is hoping that check comes in time for Christmas, but when it does arrive, it means more to her than just money, it also means part of her life is coming back
Shelia- "I'll have my life back and I won't have to rely on others anymore for things I should be able to do myself. Without my daughters,I'm not sure what I would have done and they're paycheck to paycheck too."
Her daughter's were thrilled with the news, one of them nearly lost her home while trying to help her mom. For them, when the benefits finally arrive, it will be removing a burden that's been hanging over the entire family.
"we all feel like a weight has been lifted off our shoulder's and we can't ever thank you enough"
The Social Security Administration was very cooperative with us when we approached them about the current backlog of cases and told us they couldn't move up a specific case, but they did stress that they are working hard to eliminate cases that have been ongoing for over 2 years. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, more families will get the long awaited news that Shelia waited so long to receive. An estimated 67 percent of Hoosiers were denied in their initial disability
claim according to a 2007 report.
