FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Southwest Allen County Schools superintendent Steve Yager, Ed.D., was honored by the governor Friday as the superintendent readies to retire.

Dr. Yager received the Sagamore of the Wabash, one of state's highest award, at a special presentation at SACS central office. The award honors those who have given distinguished service to the State of Indiana.

State Sen. President Pro Temp David Long, R-Fort Wayne, presented Yager the award on behalf of Gov. Mike Pence, R-Ind.

Yager officially retires July 1, when assistant superintendent Philip Downs takes over. Yager previously served as superintendent of Northwest Allen County Schools.
