FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- After a Fort Wayne woman is stabbed in the abdomen during a robbery attempt in broad daylight, residents in apartment complexes want to break their leases.
At 10:15 Tuesday morning, a Spanish-speaking woman in her 30s took her dog for a walk near her Gardenview apartment behind Bishop Dwenger High School.
She'd heard about the two previous armed robberies in her complex and had her keys in her hand.
But a man was waiting in her hallway, forced her into her unit, and hit her in the face when she didn't understand his demands.
When she reached for the knife she'd had ready in case something like this happened, he grabbed it and stabbed her in the abdomen.
She hit the panic button on her keys, setting off her car alarm, and he ran.
She was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Officer Raquel Foster, a spokeswoman for the Fort Wayne Police Department says, "Our suspect today was described as a male black, early to late 20s, light skinned, wearing a red shirt and black pants."
This marks the third time that residents at the Gardenview Apartment complex have been targeted by would-be robbers. In fact, police say that's not necessarily random, that robbers are choosing these areas because they feel comfortable here.
"They are either residing in these complexes, are very familiar with the layout, are standing or walking around or staying in a vehicle, waiting for their victim, waiting for the ideal opportunity," Foster says.
Police now think different people are responsible for the 12 apartment attacks in the past week.
Officers have stepped up their patrols, but can't be everywhere at once. They need residents to be on heightened alert.
In a previous robbery, victims told detectives they saw someone they didn't think fit in, but ignored that gut feeling before he attacked them.
"Call that suspicious activity in. It is going to be one of 200,000 calls that the Fort Wayne Police Department will respond to this year. We can take that extra call," Foster says.
