Woman Escapes After Lumber Crushes Car

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (RTV6) -- An East Chicago woman narrowly escaped disaster Thursday when a flat-bed semi-truck lost its load of lumber on her car.

Indiana State Police said Katrina Reillo, 31, was in the right lane on the 1-965 northbound to I-80/94 westbound ramp in Lake County when she realized a semi-truck next to her was losing its load of lumber and beginning to roll over.

Reillo was able to lie across her Nissan's console toward the passenger side before part of the load of lumber landed on the driver's side top -- crushing it.

Reillo was taken to Saint Mary's Medical Center in Hobart with non-life-threatening injuries. She was wearing a seat belt, police said.

The semi-truck was driven by James Reynolds, 61, of Salem, Ind. Reynolds said he took the turn too fast, causing his load to shift.

Reynolds was cited for driving at a speed to fast to avoid a collision, and for having an unsecure load. He was treated and released at the scene.
