FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – The Allen County Democratic held a breakfast Saturday morning with U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly as their guest speaker.
Everyone who attended the breakfast the Democratic Headquarters on Decatur Road, were asked to bring canned food items to donate to the Associated Church Food Drive. They later took the food to the drop off point at Hessen Cassel and McKinney Avenue.
U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly was the guest speaker at the event and spoke to 21Alive about the help they're providing.
“It really helps put more food on the table for families, it helps those in need and it's Hoosiers helping Hoosiers which it doesn't get much better than that,” he said.
Donnelly was also able to talk to us about the Jacob Sexton Military Suicide Prevention Act of 2014.
Jacob Sexton, a National Guard Specialist from Farmland, Ind., tragically took his life while home on a 15 day leave from Afghanistan.
Donnelly says this is about working non-stop with Jacob's parents to prevent other families from experiencing that same pain.
“We unfortunately last year had more service members commit suicide that we even lost in combat and we want both to be at zero,” he said.
Donnelly says that while there is no cure suicide, the problem is not too big to solve. He says we can start by improving our methods of identifying risk factors before it's too late.
