COESSE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Two people died in a fire in Whitley County that broke out in a home in the 2400 block of S. Barr St. around midnight Wednesday.

Firefighters from several departments arrived in about five minutes after receiving the first calls. They were told that one person was inside, then told two people could be trapped inside.

Flames could be seen from down the street and investigators say about 75% of the home was quickly engulfed in flames and smoke, making it difficult to fight the fire along with cold weather outside.

Two children woke some of the adults inside and the children and a woman escaped.

21Alive is told that one man went inside to rescue another man and they are the two who died. Investigators don't know the cause of the fire but say something like this is tragic and gets all of us thinking.

"We don't know the extent of the damage...if there was a working smoke detector...but it's something everyone needs to check. Check battery backup and stuff like that...make sure they're working," Union Township Fire Department Chief Chad Radke said.

No injuries to any firefighters were reported. They needed nearly an hour to bring the fire under control and were at the scene for more than six hours.

The victims identities and cause of death have not been released yet.
