Kosciusko County, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Kosciusko County officers arrest two men after a foot pursuit early Saturday morning.

An officer on patrol attempted to pull over a vehicle he had observed driving without headlights early Saturday morning in the area of U.S. 30 and Parker Street. After initially slowing down the suspected vehicle suddenly accelerated and fled down Commerce Drive before coming to a stop in the Aldi’s store parking lot. Two suspects then exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot.

State, county and local officers arrived at the abandoned vehicle and began searching the area with two canine units.

The driver, Xavier Smith, 22, Merrillville, was taken into custody near a neighboring mobile home park. The second suspect located Jonathan Terrel Willis, 23, Gary, hiding under a cardboard box behind the Big R.

Officers also located approximately .28 grams of marijuana, measuring scales and baggies inside the suspect’s vehicle as it was being impounded.

Smith was preliminarily charged with felony possession and dealing marijuana, fleeing law enforcement and driving while suspended. Smith was also found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest through Lake County on the charge of receiving stolen property. Willis was preliminarily charged with felony possession of marijuana, dealing marijuana, and fleeing law enforcement. Both Smith and Willis are being held on $2000 bonds in the Kosciusko County Jail.
